Ifeanyi Ndukwe, a young talent from Liverpool, finds himself in a unique predicament due to the complexities of Brexit regulations. The 18-year-old defender, who has been a standout performer in pre-season friendlies, is not allowed to play in competitive matches for Liverpool in the Premier League until 2026. This restriction stems from the work permit system, which requires players to meet specific points targets to qualify for a UK work visa.
Ndukwe, an Austrian youth international, has already impressed during his time at Liverpool, earning praise from captain Virgil van Dijk. His height and defensive skills have been notable, particularly in a backheel move that showcased his agility. However, the work permit regulations pose a significant challenge to his development and future prospects.
The work permit system, introduced post-Brexit, has made it more difficult for non-EU players to join English clubs. Ndukwe currently lacks the necessary points for a Governing Body Endorsement (GBE), which is a prerequisite for obtaining a work visa. The club's performance in the previous season determines the number of ESC slots, and Liverpool's low percentage of minutes played by England-qualified players resulted in only one slot, already filled by Mor Talla Ndiaye.
Ndukwe's agent, Georg Lederer, is exploring options for a loan move, aiming to find a club where he can gain valuable playing experience. The better the league, the more points Ndukwe will accumulate towards his work permit, potentially allowing him to join Liverpool this season if recalled. However, this decision must be made swiftly, as the future of this promising young talent hangs in the balance.
